COVID-19: All Inside Categories Continue to Show Basket Dollar Growth

We are 100 days into the COVID-19 crisis and what is most remarkable about the convenience channel is what hasn’t changed. Consumers continue to prove the essential nature of c-stores, while c-store retailers continue to innovate by anticipating and delivering on changing consumer expectations.

Today we take a look at convenience panel in-store transactional purchase trends over the four weeks ending June 14, compared to the relevant 4-week period in 2019.

Key findings:

  • Southern, South Central and Midwest regions are currently outperforming the other geographies
  • Sales and trips growth continue to improve
  • All inside categories continue to show basket dollar growth with Tobacco and Snacks leading

Inside Sales Growth by Region

Segmenting sales growth by NACS regions gives us a clearer look at how trends are playing out across the US. Southern, South Central and Midwest states are outperforming the other regions on a year-ago basis. Much of this variation is explained by increased trips tied to more relaxed and/or shorter shelter-at-home policies in these areas.

Inside Sales Trends Year-Over-Year
Since our last update, inside sales continue to improve with positive growth in 3 of the last 4 weeks. Total trips growth has become unstuck over the last two weeks from a recent holding pattern in the high teens and as anticipated, average basket dollar is slowly improving.

Tobacco and Alcohol continue to drive total year-over-year sales growth due to their larger basket dollar averages and high trips rank relative to other categories. However, all categories are continuing to experience double digit basket dollar growth.

We will continue to monitor trends, share additional insights, and keep you informed over the near term. C-store inside sales demand has proven to be remarkably constant throughout the crisis which is a key advantage for both retailers and brands as they seek to engage consumer need and loyalty in the years to come. As we look to the next 100 days specifically, we anticipate inside sales per store continuing to track historical growth trends and trips gradually improving with a matching decline in basket dollars.
